Rotational Instabilities and Centrifugal Hangup
One interesting class of gravitational radiation sources includes rapidly rotating astrophysical objects that encounter dynamical instabilities. We have carried out a set of simulations of rotationally induced instabilities in di erentially rotating polytropes. An n=1.5 polytrope with the Maclaurin rotation law will encounter the m=2 bar instability at T=jW j > 0:27. Our results indicate that t...
متن کاملRotational Instabilities in Post–Collapse Stellar Cores
A core–collapse supernova might produce large amplitude gravitational waves if, through the collapse process, the inner core can aquire enough rotational energy to become dynamically unstable. In this report I present the results of 3-D numerical simulations of core collapse supernovae. These simulations indicate that for some initial conditions the post–collapse inner core is indeed unstable. ...
متن کاملRotational stabilization of pinch instabilities in Taylor-Couette flow.
The axisymmetric linear stability of dissipative Taylor-Couette flow with an azimuthal magnetic field is considered. The magnetic field can be unstable without a rotation. This is the well-known pinch type instability. The stable rotation stabilizes the unstable azimuthal magnetic field. The dissipative flow stability can be classified according to Michael's stability condition for an ideal flo...
متن کاملinstabilities impact a massive star ’ s rotational evolution ?
We investigate whether angular momentum transport due to unstable pulsation modes can play a significant role in the rotational evolution of massive stars. We find that these modes can redistribute appreciable angular momentum, and moreover trigger shear-instability mixing in the molecular weight gradient zone adjacent to stellar cores, with significant evolutionary impact.
متن کاملBumps and rings in a two-dimensional neural field: splitting and rotational instabilities
In this paper, we consider instabilities of localized solutions in planar neural field firing rate models of Wilson–Cowan or Amari type. Importantly we show that angular perturbations can destabilize spatially localized solutions. For a scalar model with Heaviside firing rate function, we calculate symmetric one-bump and ring solutions explicitly and use an Evans function approach to predict th...
